The Benefits Associate is responsible for administering the day-to-day implementation, administration, communication and compliance of all PSTA benefit, wellness and recognition programs in a way which has a positive impact on the long and short term performance goals of the organization.
The Benefits Associate takes the lead in resolving plan members’ benefits-related issues and questions by providing timely and accurate benefits information and assistance.
Perform administration and processing of enrollment, COBRA elections, and terminations of employee group health, employee group dental, employee group vision, employee group life and supplemental life, 457 deferred compensation program run by ICMA-RC, retirement through the Florida Retirement System (FRS), and disability to ensure accurate and timely payment of benefits.
Counsel and respond to plan members benefit questions and needs, and investigate claim discrepancies in a timely manner. Communicate and follow up with benefits providers to resolve issues. Escalate issues to the next level as appropriate.
Perform insurance reconciliation between insurance carriers, payroll system, and benefits software. Keep reconciliations up to date and error free. Work on all issues timely. Process correct billing for payment within the defined turnaround time.
Suggest ideas for new or updated benefit programs, and help in preparing announcement material, booklets and other media for communicating to plan members. Work with the Payroll/Benefits Manager to conduct informational meetings and benefit seminars, including new hire orientation and open enrollment. Revise and reissue benefits communications material as needed.
Maintain current and accurate information in PSTA’s benefits software and other recordkeeping systems. Manage internal software and external vendor websites for accuracy, and keep data changes/elections up-to-date.
Maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with H.I.P.A.A. and other laws.
Assist with the planning, implementation and evaluations of health/wellness programs and special events designed to strategically impact PSTA’s needs. Be the leader of the Wellness Committee and work with Payroll/Benefits Manager on developing new programs beneficial to employees.
Crosstrain for familiarity with other accounting functions.
Performs additional duties as assigned to assist the Payroll/Benefits Supervisor, the Accounting Manager or the Director of Finance.
Education: Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university. Human Resources certification (PHR, SHRM-CP, etc.) preferred.
Experience: At least (3) three years’ experience in benefits administration. Some counseling experience is helpful.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of: Insurance terminology, and relevant state and federal laws. Claims resolution; principles of accounting. Some knowledge of payroll helpful.
Skilled in: Handling group insurance plans, effective oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills; claims research skills; data entry skills; reconciliation processes; excellent employee customer relation skills. Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
Abilities: Counsel and advise employees on benefits. Must have excellent customer service and communications skills. Proficiency in current employment, benefits, and compensation related laws. Proficiency in group health insurance practices and self and fully insured administration methods.
