  • Basic Purpose

    The Project Management Internship is designed to provide an introduction to various aspects of project development in the public transportation industry. The position will perform pre-entry level professional work including supporting design and construction activities for bus capital projects, including Pinellas County’s first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. 


    This internship will last approximately 50 weeks and pay $12.50 per hour, for up to a maximum of 20 hours per week. Schedules are flexible to accommodate full-time course load.  Additional hours up to 30 hours per week may be available during the summer months.  This internship is part-time temporary, and not eligible for benefits.

    Essential Functions

    Under the direction of our Director of Project Management, this Intern will:


    Assist in activities within the project management office including project initiation, engineering, construction;


    Provide assistance with bus capital and technology projects including review of design documents, preparation of cost estimates, establishment of design standards, maintaining project records, field inspection of contract work etc.;


    Assist in preparation of short-term special studies;


    Perform public transportation-related research, including site visits/field work;


    Assist in preparation of maps, graphics and other materials for meetings, reports, etc.;


    Perform peer city research on various public transportation issues;


    Assist in collecting, collating and disseminating data;


    Participate in public meetings on public transportation programs and related issues;


    Work with PSTA and consultants/contractors on public transportation capital projects;


    Coordinate activities with other internal divisions;


    Independently work on assigned task and projects;


    Perform other duties of similar nature and level as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Current or recently graduated college student (within previous 12 months) with completed coursework in Urban Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Planning, Civil Engineering, Public Administration, Construction Management, or a related field. Students currently enrolled or recently graduated from a Graduate Degree program preferred.


    Knowledge of:


    Principles and practices related to: Transit or transportation planning, design, and/or construction. 


    Report preparation methods. 


    Customer service principles.


    Skill in:


    Conducting studies and research. 


    Statistical analysis. 


    Preparing a variety of business correspondence and reports. 


    Providing customer service.


    Using a computer and related software applications.


    Analyzing, evaluating, and identifying complex planning, design, construction and/or communication issues.


    Coordinating activities between multiple departments.


    Communicating in order to interact with coworkers, supervisor, partner agency staff and the general public at a level sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.


    Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.) required.


    Knowledge of Microsoft Project or GIS and/or script/macros programming preferred.
